Chirurgeon

Combat surgeon and augmentation specialist.

The Chirurgeon is the person who keeps you alive when the medic has given up and the Sawbones is still ten minutes away. In the Nine's corporatocracy, the body is capital -- depreciating, repairable, insured capital -- and the Chirurgeon is the field maintenance technician who performs emergency repairs under conditions that would make a hospital surgeon weep. They operate in shaking dropships, on the hull-side of a breech, in the mud of a Rim colony that does not have a medical bay. Asset Realisation books Chirurgeons as "asset maintenance personnel" -- the line item that keeps the Legion's personnel investment from writing itself off. The Kadiss grid tracks their medical licenses, surgical certifications, and the bodies they have operated on; a Chirurgeon with a high patient survival rate gets better contracts and a larger operating budget. They operate on the Creed chassis (d8 HD, 3/4 BAB, Fort/Will good, Ref poor) because the role requires steady hands and iron nerves, not acrobatic reflexes. Light armour -- surgical precision demands dexterity. The Will good save is not optional; a Chirurgeon who flinches when the patient screams loses the patient. Prime requisites: WIS and DEX.

Notes

Archetype Niche: The Chirurgeon is the party's critical-care specialist. Field Surgery provides the highest single-target healing in the game (3d8 → 9d8 + WIS) but with a meaningful failure cost (damage on complication). Pain Suppression keeps allies fighting through conditions that would disable other characters. Field Amputation is the ultimate emergency button: it saves limbs from being lost, saves lives from being ended, and turns 'you're dead' into 'you're stable at -5.' The Chirurgeon's niche is the last resort -- when the Medic and Sawbones can't fix it, the Chirurgeon cuts it out.

Special Abilities

Field Surgery

FieldValue
level1
nameField Surgery

description: The Chirurgeon gains Medicine as a class skill with a +3 competence bonus. As a full-round action, the Chirurgeon can perform emergency surgery on an adjacent creature. Make a Medicine check (DC 20). On success, the target heals 3d8 + WIS modifier HP and one condition (bleeding, stunned, dazed, or 1 point of ability damage) is removed. On failure by less than 5, the target heals 1d8 HP but no condition is removed. On failure by 5+, the target takes 1d4 damage from surgical complication (the Chirurgeon stabilises them immediately but the procedure fails). The Chirurgeon can perform Field Surgery a number of times per encounter equal to 1 + half Chirurgeon level. At level 7, healing increases to 5d8. At level 13, 7d8. At level 19, 9d8. The failure damage is not carelessness; it is the reality of cutting into a body while the walls are shaking and the air is full of shrapnel.

Pain Suppression

FieldValue
level3
namePain Suppression

description: The Chirurgeon can suppress pain and shock in a creature as a standard action -- a field injection, a nerve block, a tourniquet applied with practiced speed. The target ignores the effects of one condition (stunned, dazed, nauseated, or Fatigued) and gains +2 to Fortitude saves for 1 minute. The Chirurgeon can maintain Pain Suppression on a number of targets equal to WIS modifier simultaneously. At level 9, Pain Suppression also grants the target +10 temporary HP that last for the duration -- the body running on chemicals and willpower. At level 15, Pain Suppression can be applied to unconscious or dying creatures (they regain consciousness at 0 HP and can act normally for 1 round before the suppression effect ends and they return to their previous state). One more minute. That is what the Chirurgeon buys: one more minute of function from a body that should have stopped.

Field Amputation

FieldValue
level5
nameField Amputation

description: When a creature would suffer a critical injury (limb loss, organ damage, massive trauma), the Chirurgeon can perform a Field Amputation as an immediate action. The target takes 2d6 damage but the critical injury is downgraded to a lesser condition: limb loss becomes a broken limb (disadvantage on STR/DEX checks, healable), organ damage becomes internal bleeding (1 HP/round, stabilisable), massive trauma becomes severe wound (healable). The Chirurgeon can attempt to save a creature that has died within 1 round: Medicine check DC 25, on success the creature returns at -5 HP and stable. Usable a number of times per day equal to CHA modifier (minimum 1). At level 13, the Chirurgeon can save a creature that died within 3 rounds. The name is honest: sometimes the only way to save the patient is to cut off the limb that is killing them. The Chirurgeon does not hesitate.
