Deck Hacker

Netrunner and data thief.

The Deck Hacker is the person who walks up to a terminal, plugs in, and makes the building's own security system forget you exist. In the Nine's corporatocracy, the Kadiss grid is the battlefield: connected doors, turrets, ship systems, and data nodes are network targets, while isolated hardware demands physical access. Asset Realisation books Deck Hackers as "network operations assets" whose value is measured in systems breached, ICE defeated, and data extracted. The grid is both target and adversary; dead zones, incompatible local systems, and air gaps are the terrain between. They operate on the Edge chassis (d6 HD, 3/4 BAB, Ref good, Fort/Will poor) with 8 base skill points. Light armour only: anything heavier interferes with the neural interface rig that lets them talk to machines at the speed of thought.

Notes

Archetype Niche: Ship systems intrusion and drone warfare. The Deck Hacker opens locked doors, disables turrets, and turns the enemy's own automated defences against them. Their drone provides reconnaissance without risking the party. In ship-to-ship combat, the Deck Hacker slices enemy navigation, shields, or weapons -- a force multiplier that no other class can replicate. Their niche is the digital battlespace.

Multiclass Notes: Deck Hackers can multiclass with Operative and Academic archetypes. Non-human deck hackers use simultaneous multiclassing rules.

Special Abilities

System Intrusion

FieldValue
level1
nameSystem Intrusion

description: Gain +2 to Computers and Hacking checks. Can attempt to slice into an enemy ship system, security network, or automated defence as a standard action. Base DC by system complexity: door locks DC 12, turret override DC 18, ship navigation DC 22, military command net DC 26. Intrusion attempts that fail by 5 or more alert the system administrator. The DC ladder is the Deck Hacker's combat table: every system is a target, every breach is an attack, and every failure is a counter-attack that brings Corp-Security running.

Drone Commander

FieldValue
level3
nameDrone Commander

description: Build and operate one personal reconnaissance drone. The drone has 5 HP, AC 14, and uses the hacker's Perception and Stealth ranks. Control the drone as a move action (range: 500 ft). If destroyed, a replacement can be built with 8 hours of work and 200 rek of parts. At level 7, a second drone can be built. The drone is the Deck Hacker's eyes in places they cannot physically reach -- around corners, through ventilation shafts, into rooms that have not been opened yet. The 200-rek rebuild cost is the Deck Hacker's idea of disposable income.

Black-ICE Counter

FieldValue
level5
nameBlack-ICE Counter

description: When counter-hacking or defending against hostile intrusion, the Deck Hacker takes only half damage from defensive ICE programs. Once per day, the hacker can reflect an intrusion countermeasure back at its source, forcing the originating system or slicer to save vs. their own ICE effect (DC = 10 + hacker's INT mod + half hacker level). The reflection is the Deck Hacker's signature: turning the system's own defences against it. Corp security ICE is designed to fry the intruder's neural interface; the Deck Hacker sends it back to the system that deployed it.
