Two foes threaten opposite sides: flankers gain +2 attack and ignore your DEX to AC, enabling precision/sneak damage.
A flanked character has two enemies threatening from opposite sides (or two
directly adjacent positions that bracket them). Split between the two, they
cannot defend both: each flanker gains +2 on attack rolls against them and
ignores their Dexterity bonus to AC, which in turn enables precision damage
such as the Cutpurse's sneak attack. Flanking is positional -- it exists only
so long as both allies hold their threatening squares, and the instant one
moves, drops, or breaks engagement, the flank collapses.
