Free Synth
A synthetic claiming personhood.
Free Synths are the anomaly: a manufactured being that claims to be a person. Some escaped. Some were freed by sympathetic owners. Some were built outside the system entirely -- on the Rim, in hidden workshops, by engineers who believed the question of synthetic personhood deserved an answer. Whatever the origin, a free synth has no owner, no loyalty binding, and no Kadiss registration.
The Confederation does not recognise synthetic personhood. Under law, a free synth is unregistered property -- subject to impoundment, salvage, or destruction. The Kadiss panopticon flags unregistered synthetics as hardware anomalies and dispatches enforcer units to investigate. In the Core, a free synth's existence is a legal impossibility.
On the Rim, the question is moot. No one checks registration on the frontier. A free synth is just another body -- strange-looking, maybe, but no stranger than a Thrax or a Kith. Day One cells actively recruit free synths as proof of their ideology: if a machine can choose, it deserves to choose. Whether the synthetic agrees with Day One or not, the movement's support is the closest thing to legal protection it will ever get.
Free synths are versatile by necessity. They have no factory specialisation, no built-in role. They adapt or they break. This makes them the most Human-like of all synthetic models -- capable of any archetype, constrained only by what they choose to become.
