The Basic Roll

When an uncertain action matters, roll:

d20 + relevant modifiers

Meet or exceed the target to succeed. Attacks compare with Armour Class; skill checks, saves, and ability checks compare with a Difficulty Class; psionic Power Checks compare with the power's Difficulty Number.

Advantage means roll two d20s and keep the higher. Disadvantage means keep the lower. They do not stack, and one of each cancels.

Ability Scores

Characters use Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. For ordinary d20 rolls, the modifier is (score - 10) / 2, rounded down. The compendium/ability/index contains the lookup entries.

Combat

Initiative is the exception to the high-roll rule: roll d10 - positive initiative modifiers + weapon speed; the lowest total acts first.

On a turn, a character normally has one standard action and one move action in either order, plus reasonable free actions. A standard action may be traded down for a move action. Reactions are limited to once per owner round. Guard is the supported readied strike.

Personal armour raises Armour Class and may cap Dexterity. Personal shields are capacity buffers, not Armour Class. Typed resistance and damage reduction reduce damage after a hit.

Skills and Feats

A skill check is d20 + ranks + ability modifier + other bonuses against a Difficulty Class. compendium/skill/index explain trained capabilities; compendium/feat/index are discrete talents chosen during advancement.

Conditions, Gear, and Travel

  • compendium/condition/index explain penalties and removal rules.
  • compendium/item/index lists weapons, armour, shields, tools, and consumables.
  • compendium/augmentation/index list capacity, installation risk, and rek price.
  • compendium/ship/index and related component pages list hull capabilities. EVA and breach rules support encounters, but the release does not promise an automatic boarding subsystem.

Psionics

See Fold and Psionics and the compendium/psionic/index. Fold use carries pressure and risk; it is never ordinary colour.
