Build custom gadget in 4h; +2 to use own gadgets; reduce build cost 25%; 1 use per adventure.
The character can design and build small custom gadgets
in the field. Once per adventure (or once per week of game
time), the character may design a custom gadget (an
Engineering check, DC 15 + complexity). The gadget takes
4 hours to build, uses standard salvaged parts, and costs
25% less than an equivalent purchased item. The character
gains +2 to all checks made to use their own gadgets
(intimate familiarity with their work). A gadget's
reliability is 1d20 + the character's INT modifier per
use; on a natural 1, the gadget malfunctions (GM
determines effect, usually disabling or backfiring).
Special: The custom gadget can replicate any common utility item (signal jammer, lockpick, scanner, climb tool, breaching charge) or invent a new utility within GM adjudication. The gadget must be physically reasonable within LaGrange technology; cannot duplicate full weapon systems or vehicles. The 1d20 reliability check applies each time the gadget is used in a critical moment; mundane uses (e.g., a scanner doing routine scans) do not require the check. Stacks with Jury Rig for emergency field repairs of gadgets.
