Meridian CS-1 Cryo-Stasis Pod

Cryogenic stasis pod; freezes a patient in time.

The Meridian CS-1 is the verse's standard answer to the problem of distance: when the nearest surgical suite is three days away and the patient has three hours, the CS-1 buys time by stopping biology cold -- literally. The patient is loaded into a coffin-sized pod, cooled to -196 degrees Celsius in thirty seconds, and held in a state where cellular activity ceases entirely. Bleeding stops because the blood freezes. Toxins stop spreading because the chemistry halts. Radiation damage does not accumulate because the repair mechanisms that radiation disrupts are already paused. The patient is, for all medical purposes, a frozen object. The catch is revival. Warming a cryo-preserved patient is a delicate process that requires medical supervision: too fast and the thermal shock causes cardiac arrest; too slow and the brain begins to suffer hypothermic damage. Under an autodoc or trained surgeon, revival is routine. In the field with a Trauma Medkit, it is a gamble. Meridian designed the CS-1 for long-haul transport and remote operations; Legion medevac ships carry them by the dozen.

Notes

Effect: Places a patient in cryogenic stasis within 30 seconds of activation. While in stasis: all conditions are suspended (bleeding does not worsen, toxins do not spread, radiation does not accumulate). The patient does not age, breathe, or require sustenance. Stasis can be maintained indefinitely on external power or 72 hours on internal cell. Revival takes 10 minutes under medical supervision (DC 14 Medicine check; failure causes 'hypothermic shock' -- 2d6 cold damage and disadvantage on all rolls for 1 hour). Cannot be used on patients already in cardiac arrest.
