Fold-Warded Resonance Shield

Forbidden Fold-tech barrier; immense power at the cost of touching the nightmare dimension.

The Fold-Warded Resonance Shield is the kind of technology that gets people executed. It channels the Fold, the nightmare dimension that LaGrange Cores hold at bay, and uses the energy to generate a dense reality-anchor field around the wearer. The field is extraordinarily strong: it absorbs kinetic, energy, and even Fold-manifested damage with equal ease, because it is not merely a barrier but a localised enforcement of reality against anything that would breach it. The cost is the source. Every activation tears a tiny hole in the fabric of the Fold, and the Fold pushes back. Wearers report whispers, pressure behind the eyes, and the persistent sensation of being watched by something that knows their name. Nearby non-psions feel nauseous and disoriented. Confederation law classifies the Fold-Warded shield as a forbidden technology; possession in Core systems is a capital offence. On the Rim, where the law is a suggestion, these shields change hands for fortunes and blood. No one admits to making them. The prevailing theory is that they are reverse-engineered from Akraan ruins, which raises more questions than it answers.

Notes

Drawbacks: channels the Fold; each activation risks Fold Cascade (minor manifestation on a failed save), reality-anchor field causes discomfort and nausea in nearby non-psions, illegal under Confederation law; possession is a capital offence in Core systems, extremely rare; no known manufacturer, only scattered examples from unknown sources, the shield whispers to its wearer during use
