Rim-Pattern Jury-Rigged Deflection Field
Scrap-built energy barrier; unreliable, cheap, and better than nothing.
The Rim-pattern deflection field is not a product; it is a practice. Scavenged emitters, cracked cells, and hand-soldered wiring assembled by Rim techs who learned their trade keeping Derelict reactors from melting down. The field it generates is thin, flickering, and prone to dropping out at the worst possible moment, but it costs almost nothing to build and it has saved more Rim lives than any Core-manufactured barrier, simply because it is the only shield most frontier operators can afford. Every Rim-pattern field is unique because every one is built from whatever fell off the last salvage haul. The tech who built it can keep it running; anyone else is gambling. On the Rim, that is normal.

Notes
Drawbacks: unreliable; 15% chance of field dropout per hit (no soak that round), slow recharge; effectively a one-hit shield in a fast fight, salvaged components degrade; requires constant tinkering to maintain, no manufacturer warranty; if it breaks, you fix it yourself
