Notes

Dangers: Indenture flash-mob: a crowd of newly-booked assets outside the Ward's processing office; Kadiss sensors fail to map the crowd in real time because the indenture office is a documented Kadiss blind spot, and Asset Realisation has no plans to fix it., The Quiet Knocking: at certain hours of the local day, a knock sounds on the indenture office's back door; nobody has ever answered it; the door's handle has worn smooth from being tested, and the booking clerks do not speak of it on shift.

Hooks: A family has come to the Ledger Ward to claim the indenture contract of a son who has been booked into Navigator pool service; the family has the original loan paperwork and the indenture officer is asking the party to find out which copy is the real one before the next ship out., An agitator in the Ledger Ward has been distributing cards that read 'KADISS IS THE CHAIN'; the agitator is a Day One convert and the party has been hired to identify her, not stop her, before the next Ark arrival throws the Ward into a public panic., A Helix recruiter has set up a free gene-screening booth outside a Ledger Ward indenture office; the screenings are real and the recruitment numbers are too good to be honest, and Asset Realisation wants to know which Helix branch is paying for them.

Lore: The Ledger Ward is Rekk Origin's indenture processing district: seventeen million residents, almost all of them either booked, booking, or waiting to be booked. The Ward is where Asset Realisation doctrine meets its raw material: a person with a bad debt walks up the Processing Steps, into the indenture office, and walks out a tier or a sentence later as an asset on someone's books. The Hostel Stacks are where the indenture- awaiting sleep between bookings, in buildings owned by Asset Realisation and unofficially sub-let to Day One chapels whose sermons the company finds, on balance, calming. The Counting Floor is the Ward's central market, where every transaction is logged by an Argus correspondent in real time -- which makes it the most surveilled market in the Core, and therefore the safest place to do business on the books and the worst place to do business off them. Day One agitators hand out cards that read 'KADISS IS THE CHAIN' outside the Processing Steps; Asset Realisation lets them, because the cards always say it in the same four lines, and the four lines have not changed in thirty years.

Notable: The Processing Steps: the long staircase outside the indenture office where families wait to discover the new tier of their relative's life; the steps are wide enough to seat two hundred and worn smooth in the centre., The Hostel Stacks: the residential blocks where the indenture-awaiting sleep between bookings; the buildings are owned by Asset Realisation and unofficially sub-let to Day One chapels whose sermons the company finds, on balance, calming., The Counting Floor: the Ledger Ward's central open-air market, where every transaction is logged by an Argus correspondent in real time.
