Notes
Dangers: Counter-audit retaliation: if the phantom reserves are exposed, every Family on the Exchange board has motive to bury the investigators in legal fees., Ledger-rage: a station-bound AI on the Vault's old bookkeeping layer starts flagging genuine errors as fraud, freezing legitimate transactions across three sectors.
Hooks: A Vault clerk has noticed a phantom entry: a rek movement that audits cleanly on paper but cannot be sourced to any physical reserve; the clerk hires the party to find the missing ingots before the next quarterly audit., A Family heir arrives with a sealed letter of marque from a dead relative and wants the Vault to honour a debt the Family itself does not believe exists., A Drift Logistics captain parks a hijacked cargo outside the Vault and broadcasts the manifest; the manifest names Meridian clients by code and the codes are real.
Lore: The Vault of Ledgers is the orbital mirror of Meridian Balance: where the Long Hall handles the daily pricing of the rekkie, the Vault holds the physical reserves that back the price. Eighteen thousand people live and work in orbit; the population is overwhelmingly clerk, auditor, security, and the small hereditary caste of Vault families whose great-grandparents helped build the original peg. The Counting Floor is the Vault's public face -- a vast chamber where physical ingots and tankards are matched to the live ledger by a hybrid station-mind and a small army of human clerks. The match is sacred; a one-percent mismatch is enough to move a sector. The Whisper Decks are where the Exchange handles its private settlements, the ones the public ledger will never see -- quiet mergers, debt conversions too ugly to broadcast, the rare treaty between a Family and a Rim warlord. The Cradle, the Vault's oldest sealed chamber, holds the original resource tokens the rekkie was first pegged to. Nobody alive has been inside it. The Vault's own staff will tell you, politely, that they do not know what is in there either, and that they would prefer to keep it that way.
Notable: The Counting Floor: the orbital's central chamber, where physical reserves are matched to the live ledger by a hybrid of station-mind and human clerk., The Whisper Decks: soundproofed rooms where high-value clients can negotiate settlements that the public ledger will never see., An older, much smaller Vault -- 'the Cradle' -- that holds the original resource tokens the rekkie was first pegged to; nobody knows what is inside.
