Day One Prophet

The voice of Day One: a leader who turned grief into gospel.

A Day One Prophet is the ideological leader of a Day One movement: someone who survived the event that Day One is named for and converted that survival into a doctrine that others follow. They are not fighters; they are the voice. Their power is charisma, conviction, and the ability to make people believe that the verse can be different. The Confederation calls them demagogues. The Rim calls them prophets.

A Prophet is a boss-tier social encounter: the ideological anchor of a Day One cell. They are protected by Martyrs who will die for them, and their power grows with every act of violence the Confederation commits in response. The lever is the doctrine -- undermine the doctrine and the Prophet loses their power. But killing the Prophet often makes the doctrine stronger.

Notes

Full Attack: Holdout slug pistol ranged +5 (1d6 energy; range 30 ft; concealed) or Walking Staff melee +4 (1d6 bludgeoning)

Habitat: Rim stations, under-hab warrens, frontier settlements, and anywhere the dispossessed gather. Found preaching to a crowd, in a safe-house with Martyrs, or at the site of a Confederation atrocity. Roll 1d6: 1-2 = Prophet preaching to a crowd (charismatic, protected by Martyrs), 3-4 = Prophet in a safe- house (planning, inspiring), 5-6 = Prophet at a site of atrocity (grieving, converting grief into doctrine).

Languages: Trade Cant (fluent); Core Standard; two Rim dialects; Day One cipher-cant; the language of the dispossessed (a creole understood by all Rim-born)

Psionics: Gene-psionic; see Gene-Psionic Whisper. The Prophet does not know they are psychic; they attribute the ability to spiritual conviction.

Resistances: Martyr interposition (Martyrs absorb attacks meant for the Prophet), Spiritual conviction (+4 to Will saves against fear, domination, and mind-affecting effects)

Senses: Normal human vision; spiritual awareness grants +4 to Sense Motive and +4 to Notice for threats and deception; passive Perception 16

Tactics: The Prophet does not fight. They inspire. They use Voice of the Dispossessed to turn enemies, Inspire the Faithful to boost the Martyrs, and Gene-Psionic Whisper to influence the key target. The Prophet is always surrounded by Martyrs who absorb attacks. If the Prophet falls, the doctrine survives -- killing the Prophet is often the worst tactical choice.

Treasure: Walking staff (symbolic; 0 rek to outsiders, priceless to the faithful), holdout slug pistol (150 rek), Day One cipher-pad (doctrine, contacts, cell locations; 1,000-5,000 rek to Confederation intelligence), personal effects (a photograph, a name, a date -- the reason the Prophet preaches), 2d10 rek in donations, gene-psionic residue (harvestable; 500-2,000 rek to Core labs or Rim cults).

Vulnerabilities: Non-combatant (the Prophet has no combat skills; without Martyrs they are helpless), Ideological rigidity (the Prophet will not compromise the doctrine; they will die before they recant), Martyrdom is the plan (the Prophet knows that their death fuels the cause; they may provoke martyrdom deliberately)

Special Abilities

Voice of the Dispossessed

FieldValue
actionCostStandard
nameVoice of the Dispossessed

description: The Prophet speaks to the hearts of the downtrodden. All non-allied creatures within 30 ft must make a DC 16 Will save or be Charmed for 1d4 rounds (the words are genuinely moving). Creatures who have suffered under the Confederation take a -4 penalty to the save. Player-visible: the Prophet speaks, and the words are not rhetoric -- they are truth. You feel the pull.

Martyr's Devotion

FieldValue
actionCostpassive
nameMartyr's Devotion

description: The Prophet is protected by 1d4+1 willing Martyrs (see NPC-DAY-ONE-MARTYR) who will die to protect them. The Martyrs interpose themselves between the Prophet and any attacker, gaining +4 to AC when protecting the Prophet. If the Prophet is attacked, the nearest Martyr takes the hit instead (once per Martyr). Player-visible: the Prophet does not flinch. The Martyrs do not let the bullets reach them.

Inspire the Faithful

FieldValue
actionCostSwift (1/encounter)
nameInspire the Faithful

description: The Prophet inspires all allied Day One NPCs within 60 ft. For 1d4+1 rounds, all allied Day One NPCs gain +2 to attack rolls, +2 to saves, and immunity to fear. The Prophet must be visible and audible. Player-visible: the Prophet raises their voice, and every Day One fighter in the room stands taller.

The Doctrine Survives

FieldValue
actionCostpassive
nameThe Doctrine Survives

description: If the Prophet is killed, the doctrine does not die. Within 1d4 weeks a new Prophet emerges, and the movement gains +2 to recruitment (the martyrdom fuels the cause). The Prophet knows this and may sacrifice themselves strategically if the message needs to spread. Player-visible: the Prophet smiles when the gun is pointed at them. 'You do not understand. You cannot kill an idea.'

Gene-Psionic Whisper

FieldValue
actionCostStandard (1/encounter)
nameGene-Psionic Whisper

description: The Prophet uses an innate gene-psionic ability to implant a suggestion in one creature's mind. The target must make a DC 15 Will save or follow a single reasonable suggestion (lower the weapon, open the door, step aside). The Prophet does not know they are psychic -- they believe it is the power of their conviction. Player-visible: the Prophet looks into your eyes and says one sentence. The sentence makes too much sense.
