A lean Frontier dropout in a long oilskin coat that smells of Ribbonback musk and woodsmoke, with the sun-reddened face of somebody who has not been off a scraper-beast in a week.
She is unconnected. The Kadiss unit behind her left ear is a dead chip, removed six years ago when she walked off a Heron-family indenture contract, which means she has no standing, no filing rights and nothing on the grid to vouch for her.
Yesterday at dawn she found a man in the high scrub, four miles off the Lonely Steppe ridgeline: late forties, thin, one side of his face at the wrong end of a thermal burn still weeping through her field-dressing. Her scraper-beast was dead beside him, killed by something with claws that matched nothing in her experience. The air around him smelled of a metallic sweetness she cannot place.
She carried him down herself. Fourteen hours on foot.
She has not reported him. The Marshal is dead, and Lyon would file the paperwork and see the stranger inside a Heron intake facility before the Confederation shuttle arrived. She would rather take her chances on strangers.
She cannot pay. What she offers instead is the only currency she has: the stranger has seen whatever is in the high scrub and lived, and in his sleep he has been talking about a gate that has not closed.
