Prospector Mae
Eldest settler of Tannhauser Reach, Dynar, seventy-one, who filed the original claim forty years ago.
Eldest settler, Dynar, seventy-one, and the person whose name is on the original claim. Forty years ago there was a valley and a filing, and everything since has been built on top of that piece of paper.
Mae knows the ground the way nobody else in the Reach does: every cave, every ridgeline, every seasonal wash, and which of them are dry in which month. The hand-drawn map the party are given is Mae's, sketched on a scrap of hide.
Mae also knows something the council does not. There is a back trail through the northern ridgeline, a goat-path wide enough for one person at a time, which runs two hours to a cave system and four hours beyond it to the open scrub. It is an evacuation route.
It has not been mentioned to the council in forty years, and the reason is not secrecy. A settlement that knows it has a way out is a settlement that will use it, and Mae has watched three valleys empty that way.
On the war-rig, Mae's contribution is the only one that matters and comes out as a piece of prospecting: it is big, it still needs fuel, and fuel burns.
